The Occidental Tourist: East Meets West
Asian Art & Artifacts with Paintings by Roger Clayton
July 11 - August 15, 2009
Opening Reception: July 11, 2009
6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Since a sabbatical in Kyoto, Japan in 1997, our interest in and affection for all things Japanese have expanded to include other Asian cultures including China, Thailand and India. But as a first love, Japan holds a special place for us--and for artist Roger Clayton, whose wife Rie is a native of Tokyo. His whimsical paintings reflect the influence of many of the disparate popular and traditional forms found in Japanese art, including painting, ukiyoe, anime and manga. Clayton's simple, joyful and vibrant images invite the innocent, childlike self in each of us to come out to play. Pairing these works with Asian antiques, artifacts and art from the gallery collection, we offer an exhibit that invites you to explore the unexpected dimensions of Asian culture, including the paradoxical aesthetic that celebrates both the playful and the profound.
